Following my research I knew my final outcome needed to be narrative driven and detailed. The author refers to a number of interesting moments and visuals throughout the book, therefore there were elements that I wanted to include, which I have explained in my sketch development as follows:

Broken Window

1. To include the 'carved wooden archway with painted glass panels' which was discovered to be broken- a poignant moment in the story (a clue). I felt it would also be a great way of introducing some architecture like Ronald Searle included in his work

The School

2. To feature the school as a building full of secrets; dominating and imposing. I started by sketching the school based on the floorplan included by the author

Drama

3. I played with perspective and scale to bring a sense of drama and looming-ness to the school. I also believe it is important to show strong characterisation for this particular demographic, based on research I have done previously.

Fish Eye Perspective

4. Taking inspiration from Escher's Hand with Reflecting Sphere, I started playing around with a fish eye perspective. I followed the basics from Dan Beardshaw on his You Tube channel (click on image for link)

Magnifying Glass

5. The circular shape reminded me of a magnifying lens, like the one on the Cluedo board game, so played around with this concept. I moreover liked the sense of drama achieved, but I felt it could be further emphasised by reducing the scale of Daisy and Hazel

No Distortion

6. I felt happier with the scaling, but it looked too rigid. If you were to look through a magnifying glass, the image would be distorted. I wanted to develop this effect further

Distortion

7. Taking my drawing from analogue to digital, I was able to experiment and eventually be able to create an element of distortion using Photoshop. I also was able to achieve more detail- from the windows and shading to Daisy and Hazel's hair, which was also mentioned by the author

Simplicity

8. Despite researching the authors references to the different Greek muses, within the wooden window, I chose not to further complicate the illustration by adding this. By doing this, it ultimately allowed me to use the image as a backdrop for the back cover that sits behind the body text.
